Meanwhile, back on the farm

My sources tell me that a troop of wild turkeys - what are multiple turkeys called anyway? A gaggle? A conglomerate? Republicans? (yes, that last joke was too easy but I couldn't resist) - has invaded my parents' quiet Berkeley neighborhood. As you can see, cars in California stop for anything, even heinous be-waddled creatures. Those sheltered feral birds wouldn't last a day in Cairo.

Berkeley also made an appearance in the September 14th issue of the International Herald Tribune a roommate picked up. The article is entitled "University fences in a Berkeley protest" and it begins:

"In many ways and for many months, the protest outside Memorial Stadium at the University of California has been business, and Berkeley, as usual.

On one side are the protesting tree lovers who have been living Tarzan-like December in a stand of coastal oaks and other trees."

I'm not sure what a "stand" of trees is, but I can read between the lines of this article to know what the journalists really want to say: Dirty hippies, tree-living, Ralph Nadar, dirty hippies, drugs.

Ah, Berkeley.

I love it! The turkeys will be famous by Thanksgiving and, it is hoped, will survive Thanksgiving. The "quiet Berkeley neighborhood" doesn't look very quiet in the picture.
